Nitrox: The Secret to Dive Longer, Safer, and with Less Fatigue
Can you imagine enjoying more minutes underwater without worrying so much about nitrogen? That’s exactly what Nitrox diving offers—a favorite gas mix among thousands of divers who want to get the most out of every single dive.
Today, Nitrox Diver is the most popular PADI specialty after Open Water. Years ago, it was only available to advanced technical divers. Now it’s within your reach… and you may be surprised at how much it can transform your diving experience.
What exactly is Nitrox?
When we increase the oxygen content above 21%, we get Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN)—a mix with more oxygen and less nitrogen.
The advantage?
Less nitrogen absorption = increased safety and longer bottom times within no-decompression limits.

Yes—and it completely changes the way you dive.
During your PADI Open Water Diver course, you learn that nitrogen absorption limits depth, bottom time, and repetitive dives.
With Nitrox, those limits are expanded:
✔ Longer bottom times without entering decompression.
✔ Shorter surface intervals.
✔ Increased safety margins.
✔ Ideal for dive trips, liveaboards, or multiple dives per day
A practical example:
With Nitrox 32% at around 21 meters, you can enjoy approximately 60 minutes of no-decompression time—more than 20 extra minutes compared to air, always depending on your gas consumption.
That’s why Nitrox is perfect if you’re planning a dive safari or liveaboard: more time underwater and quicker returns to the water between dives.
Key fact: Nitrox does not increase the duration of your cylinder. Your gas consumption remains the same. What changes is the amount of nitrogen your body absorbs.
Are there any downsides to Nitrox?
Only one: maximum depth is limited.
The higher the oxygen percentage, the shallower the maximum allowable depth. But for most recreational dives, this isn’t a drawback—it’s actually an advantage.
